A World of Stress
Our world and the world of those around us can really start to crumble when
we all suffer from the effects of stress. We've looked at personal stress
but what happens when we're in a group. We may wear the same uniforms or talk the same talk but
we all still suffer from a complex set of individual feelings that influence
the way in which we communicate and relate to others within the group.
When our personal stress starts to effect
the way we interact with those around us, they in turn will also react to
us differently. Unaware of these effects we might actually induce a state
of stress in others. This effect will then cascade through a larger organisation
and result in a dramatic reduction in its effiency and productivity.
Stress within the Family
At a smaller level even the humble family can also suffer at the hands of
stress, unaware that it's
being torn apart by a complex interaction between it's members and their
sore feelings. |

A classic example of the way in which our
sore feeling can play such a crucial role in the way we react to others
is the contrast between adults and children. As we get older not only do
we learn to judge others by their appearance and poise but we also react
to them according to the labels we think they have given us. Children have
no concept of this and take most situations on face value. Even when brought
together as a group of strangers, children will often just get on a play
with each other. Our adult inhibitions often prevent us from doing so and lead to a basic breakdown
in the ability of a group to function as one.
The effective control of stress has to start
with the individual. Each members ability to realise the potential of their
fundamental human needs will help them to relate to other group members
and forge a stronger feeling of group membership.
The Role of Management
Management play a key role in this process since they are often the cause
of stress in the first place. Where managers and team leaders are in tune
with their sore feelings and fundamental needs an organisation or group
will function far better. Individuals will feel able to speak their minds
as only true friends can can. Everyone will know where they stand within
the group and essentially the level of stress within the individuals and
the group as a whole will be greatly reduced as each member is able to fulfil
the potential of their fundamental human needs.
